Claude Research Preview Adds Direct Computer Control for Task Automation

Anthropic has launched a research preview feature that allows Claude to directly control your computer to complete tasks. This functionality is available in Claude Cowork and Claude Code.
How It Works
Claude can perform actions you'd normally do manually at your desk:
- Open your applications
- Navigate your browser
- Fill in spreadsheets
The system prioritizes connected app integrations like Slack and Calendar. When no connector exists for a specific tool, Claude requests permission to open the application directly on your screen.
Key Features
- Assign tasks from your phone and return to completed work
- Conversations continue where they left off
- Set up recurring tasks (e.g., "scan your email every morning" or "pull a report every Friday")
- Claude handles the execution automatically once configured
Limitations and Availability
Anthropic notes this is a research preview with acknowledged limitations:
- Performance isn't always perfect
- Complex tasks may require a second attempt
- Currently available only on macOS
- Requires Pro or Max subscription
To try the feature, users need to update their desktop app and pair it with mobile. The company is sharing it early to learn where it works effectively and where improvements are needed.
