GitHub Copilot Removes Opus Models from Pro Plan, Pauses New Signups

GitHub is making significant changes to Copilot plans for individual users, focusing on service reliability and sustainable usage. These changes affect model availability, signup options, and usage limits across different plan tiers.
Signup Changes
GitHub is pausing new signups for Student, Pro, and Pro+ plans to prioritize service quality for existing paying customers. Copilot Free remains open for new signups, and existing users can still upgrade between plans.
Model Availability Changes
Opus models are no longer available on Copilot Pro. Opus 4.7 remains available on Pro+ plans. As previously announced, Opus 4.5 and 4.6 will also be removed from Pro+.
Usage Limits
Pro+ plans now offer more than 5X the usage limits of Pro plans. Users on Pro who need higher limits can upgrade to Pro+. GitHub will show warning notifications in VS Code and Copilot CLI as users approach their limits, with usage progress tracking coming soon.
Impact on Current Users
Users who hit unexpected limits or find these changes don't work for them can cancel their Pro or Pro+ subscription and won't be charged for April usage. GitHub support is offering refunds between April 20 and May 20 for affected users.
These changes are part of GitHub's effort to ensure predictable service for existing customers while managing resource allocation across their Copilot offerings.
