Claude Now Works Inside Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
Anthropic pushed Claude for Google Workspace into public beta on all paid Claude plans. The add-on lives in a sidebar next to your open Docs, Sheets, or Slides file. It reads the file, sees your current selection, and writes changes back in place. A separate set of Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors (also beta) lets you create and edit Google files from the Claude chat instead.
What it does inside each app
- Docs: Edits in place without disturbing surrounding formatting — e.g. fixing a sentence or restyling a heading. Larger rewrites arrive as suggestion cards in the sidebar, each highlighting the affected passage, with apply/dismiss controls. Example from the post: tighten a PRD's executive summary and convert next steps into a table in one prompt.
- Sheets: Writes formulas, builds pivot tables and native Sheets charts, and adds new tabs. For joins or data cleaning, it pulls a range into Python, processes it, and writes results back. A sample task: start from an empty sheet, attach source files, and ask for a Q3 budget vs. actuals report with a tab per team, a summary chart, and flags on over-budget lines.
- Slides: Builds slides from the deck's own layouts and themes so they match. It self-checks for overlapping elements, off-slide content, and hard-to-read text.
Two edit modes
Default is "Ask before edits": every change appears as an approval card with a summary, and Claude waits. "Accept all edits" mode lets it run through the task and apply changes without stopping.
Connectors and skills carry over
When signed in with your Claude account, the sidebar exposes the same models, connectors, and skills as Claude itself. The example given: request a QBR deck for a customer, and Claude pulls account history from Salesforce plus recent call notes via your Google Drive connector. Save the QBR format as a skill and the team can reuse it. On Enterprise plans, the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys (CMEK), and OpenTelemetry audit export extend to the add-on.
Editing Google files from Claude
The new Docs/Sheets/Slides connectors let you start in Claude, paste a Google file link or ask for a new doc/sheet/deck, and open it in a pane beside the chat. This path fits new files or work spanning multiple files. Claude's access matches your existing Google sharing permissions.
Setup
Install from the Google Workspace Marketplace, then open a file and go to Extensions > Claude > Open Claude. Admins can deploy to a domain or selected groups from the Google Admin console. To edit Google files from Claude, enable the Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides connectors — on Team and Enterprise plans, an owner or primary owner must enable them first.
