Hermes Rescues Bricked OpenClaw Bot After Failed 2026.7.3 to 10.5 Upgrade
A Reddit user on r/openclaw reports that upgrading OpenClaw from version 2026.7.3 to 10.5 bricked their bot, and that the Hermes tool was able to restore it fully in about 10 minutes.
What happened
The user had been running 2026.7.3 for a long time because it was stable. On a slow day at work, they decided to update. The upgrade failed: the bot died and there appeared to be no way back. They spent hours troubleshooting with ChatGPT, with no success. The bot stayed dead over a weekend of work travel.
According to the user, ChatGPT revealed that in the 9.5 update OpenClaw had a major change to its database, and there was no migration path from 7.3 to 10.5. A subsequent attempt to get 9.5 running also failed.
Why it mattered
This wasn't a hobby setup: the user owns a company that uses OpenClaw company-wide for many different tasks, so the dead bot was going to become a business problem. They had over 8 months invested in the OpenClaw setup, including tons of cron jobs, alternative personalities, and multiple agents with hundreds of skills.
The Hermes detour
The user downloaded Hermes to migrate the OpenClaw instance into it. Install was simple and worked out of the box. Then came the migration:
- Hermes ran out of tokens; the user added their Codex account, which was easy enough.
- Hermes struggled with the OpenClaw migration. Tests of flows were not working, and access to workspaces and websites was broken.
- After a few hours, it felt like trying to get a new employee up to speed.
The fix
Instead of continuing the migration into Hermes, the user decided to see if Hermes could fix the original OpenClaw instance. They gave it a prompt, hit enter, and 10 minutes later the OpenClaw bot was back and updated to 10.5. According to the post, nothing was lost, all connections were restored, and every test was successful.
Takeaway
The user plans to keep Hermes on their computer going forward specifically to fix OpenClaw if these problems occur again. They summarize it as: "OC for Life, Hermes for the win."
If you're still on 2026.7.3, this is a reminder that the jump to 9.5+ includes a database change with no documented migration path. Having a second agent available to repair a broken install may be worth considering before you hit update.
